How to Calculate Distances of FM Transmissions

Many customers will ask me an important question,  how far 100W or 1KW machine can cover

In fact, the FM signal coverage is determined by many factors, such as transmitter power, antenna gain, height of the antenna mounting, and a regional building density.

According to our experience, we propose the following solutions:

Below are the proposal:

3 KM Radius:  30W FM Transmitter + 1-Bay Antenna(1.5dBd) with 15 Meters Height

6 KM Radius: 100W FM Transmitter + 1-Bay Antenna(1.5dBd) with 30 Meters Height

10 KM Radius: 300W FM Transmitter +2-Bay Antenna(4.5dBd) with 40 Meters Height

20 KM Radius: 500W FM Transmitter + 4-Bay Antenna(7.5dBd) with 50 Meters Height
1KW FM Transmitter + 4-Bay Antenna(7.5dBd) with 30 Meters Height

30 KM Radius: 1KW FM Transmitter + 6-Bay Antenna(9.3dBd) with 60 Meters Height
1KW FM Transmitter + 4-Bay Antenna(7.5dBd) with 100 Meters Height

40 KM Radius: 3KW FM Transmitter + 6-Bay Antenna(9.3dBd) with 100 Meters Height
5KW FM Transmitter + 6-Bay Antenna(9.3dBd) with 80 Meters Height

50 KM Radius: 5KW FM Transmitter + 8-Bay Antenna(10.5dBd) with 150 Meters Height
10KW FM Transmitter + 6-Bay Antenna(9.3dBd) with 120 Meters Height

60 KM Radius: 10KW FM Transmitter + 8-Bay Antenna(10.5dBd)  with 200 Meters Height

70 KM Radius: 10KW FM Transmitter + 8-Bay Antenna(10.5dBd)  with 300 Meters Height

80 KM Radius: 10KW FM Transmitter + 8-Bay Antenna(10.5dBd)  with 400 Meters Height

90 KM Radius: 10KW FM Transmitter + 8-Bay Antenna(10.5dBd)  with 500 Meters Height

Note: The above is the reference data
However,  The transmission range depends on many factors. The true distance is based on the sensitivity of the receiver, antenna of the receiver, and the building and other obstructions, which are between the transmitter and receiver. And the distance will much more in countryside.
EXAMPLE 100W:
I have a USA customer using 100W fm transmitter with GP antenna in his hometown ,and it was tested in a car , covering 12km.
I tested the 100W fm transmitter with GP antenna in my hometown ,it cover about 7-8km.
I tested the 100W fm transmitter with GP antenna in Guangzhou city ,it cover about only 5-6Km

    • szg says:

      Dear Friend,
The cover range will according to the height of the antenna and the the dense and height of the buildings in your local city. Then you can choose the power of the transmitter. If it need to cover 40KM,I think it is better to use the 1000W fm transmitter.Thank you1

      Best regards,
      Erin
